Hand Knotted Persian Shiraz

A dynamic creation that engages the eye and sparks curiosity, this rug was skilfully woven by two artisans working side by side, likely women from the tribe multitasking amid tending to sheep, managing family affairs, and cooking. The designs, handed down through generations and originating within the community, follow no set graph, creating an initial illusion of symmetry that, upon closer inspection, reveals a deliberate asymmetry. Animals, elongated on one side or appearing sporadically, such as a bird versus a dog, contribute to the rug's vitality and thought-provoking nature.

Restoring tribal rugs holds a special fascination for me, beginning with the smallest hole and progressing through the textile, unravelling the weavers' stories. Each imperfection tells of moments when fatigue, frustration, loss of focus, or a spontaneous shift in creative direction influenced the weaving process. Simplifications may emerge as weavers anticipate migration to summer or winter camps. This narrative, embedded in the rug, allows me to connect with the weavers' experiences, discerning the reasons behind the damage and facilitating a restoration that honours the piece's history.

In my assessment, this rug attests to the technical skill of the weaver. The abundance of movement, varied colour palette, and intricate motifs reflect the work of highly competent weavers who skilfully brought this vibrant piece to life.
