Description
Presented in a High Regency or Rococo Revival glazed frame.
Enamel on Copper Painting by Henry Bone, R.A. (British, 1755–1834).
He was the Court Painter to King George III, IV and the Duke of York.
It depicts Lord Russell (later the 8th Duke of Bedford) as a young boy dressed in historical costume, seated next to a real tennis racket and ball.
There is an authentic handwritten inscription by Henry Bone on the reverse side of the enamel plaque. Bone routinely wrote detailed historical notes, signatures, and dates on the counter-enamel (the back of the copper sheet) before the final firings.
It reads :
"William Lord Russell / Born July the first, 1809."
"Painted for the Marchioness of Tavistock"
"London / Augt. 1827"
"Painted by Henry Bone R.A. / Enamel-Painter to His Majesty [King George IV] / and to the late Duke of York &c. &c."
"- after the Original / by Stroehling."
