A good early Eccles of Manchester Brass and Steel Miners Lamp.
Type GR6S. No.1002.
The Eccles/Davy safety lamp was first introduced in the late 1800s. It is designed to operate a flame in a flammable and explosive environment.
In the mid 1940s, when the British coal mines were nationalised, it became the preferred safety system adopted in all mines.
Miners using these lamps received extra money due to the dangerous environment they worked in.
This lamp is a used example.
