Description

This nineteenth century ceramic character jug depicts Sir John Falstaff, the famous Shakespearean character, seated in a relaxed pose. The jug is finished in a monochromatic cream glaze with a dark bronze rim along the top of his hat, which forms the spout. Falstaff is shown holding a cup in one hand, while his other arm forms the sturdy handle of the vessel. He is dressed in traditional period attire, including a doublet and hose, with the base of the jug decorated with a Greek key pattern.
