Description
White ground with colourful hand painted decoration. Height 32cms.
Staffordshire pottery flatback figures were made from the 1830s onwards. Most being manufactured before 1900. They were almost exclusively made in small potteries where identifying makers’ marks were absent. Now collectively described as Staffordshire Figures from the Potteries, Staffordshire, England (although some were made in other parts of the country). As the 19th century progressed and their popularity increased they were generally made in earthenware for the cheaper mass market. The flatback was designed to be displayed on the mantlepiece there therefore no need to decorate the back (thus saving money in their production).
