A pair of early late 19th Century 20th Century Staffordshire ceramic pug dogs with gilt collars.
It was very fashionable for pairs of Staffordshire dogs, also called walley dogs to be placed on the mantle piece of C19th& C20th homes. Spaniels were a more usual choice but other breeds were also manufactured as were these lovely pug dogs which are far more unusual.
Walley dogs were often made in the Potteries, Staffordshire, England, each pair being hand painted and unique, displaying a range of facial expressions from happy to ferocious. They have become very collectable over the years. Very cute
