The Capitol
The cornerstone was laid by President Washington September 18, 1793. In 1800 the first section was completed and 32 Senators and 106 Representatives moved from Philadelphia to occupy the new capitol
British troops burned the building in 1824 and by 1819 the North and South wings were restored. The imposing cast iron dome, replacing an old wooden one, was completed during the Civil War as a symbol of the strength and unity of the Nation.
