Description
*** Clarence Terrace is a Grade 1 listed building and is the smallest terrace in Regent's Park. Named after King William IV, inspired by James Nash it was constructed by James Burton in 1823 to a design by Decimus Burton and it remains unaltered to this day. The coloured and varnished print on the top of the box is from T.H.Shepherd's "Metropolitan Improvements" pub March 31st 1827 p263.
The family of the Rev. Leonard Shafto Orde 1807-1895 (Chaplain to the Duke of Northumberland) are recorded as living at Shorestone Hall in Northumberland in the 19th Century and as was typical of Country House life at the time staged theatrical entertainments at home. The family appear to have rather charmingly re-purposed this box from an earlier period as a part of a private theatrical production.
