Description
Height 19cms. Length 49cms.
By the end of the 19th century shop tills had progressed from a box holding money to a ringing register to give notice that it was being opened and sales were taking place. A paper roll was introduced to record when each transaction was made. The sales would be recorded on this by hand. Shop keepers started charging amounts that forced a sale needing change. For example 99 pennies or 49 pennies. So that a paper trail could be made for cashing up at the end of the day. All designed to help prevent employee theft.
Brass handle, unpolished, signs of historic metal polish. Good working condition. Some age-related wear and marks to surface consistent with use.
