Description

A Late Victorian Revolving Burr Walnut Reading Table by Joseph Smith of Stockton on Tees (metal label on underside of table top) features a superbly figured circular top and two tier level corner shelves with delicate spindle galleries to house books, on a rotating turned central column and raised on attractive downswept tripod legs with a finial at the base. This style of revolving book table perfectly encapsulates the Victorian desire to combine elegance with practicality. The racks were intended to keep ones cherished books neatly organised and readily to hand, whilst the circular top provides a convenient surface for reading, writing or taking refreshments. Today these wonderfully versatile pieces remain just as useful, making ideal lamp tables or occasional tables whilst offering an attractive and unusual solution for displaying books. Overall good condition with minor indentations to the walnut top due to age and use, but this does not impact the table and adds to the character and charm. One section to a top arm has been reinforced at some point due to split which actually gives it added strength for heavier books.
