Description
Wrought iron light holder set into a heavy wood base.
A dried plant stalk (Rush) dipped in left over animal fat would be placed into the pincers at the top. Rushed were burnt at angle, if burnt vertically they would go out and horizontally, too fast. The samll candle socket on the side was a luxury feature which could be used on special occasions or when a candle could be afforded.
A single rush light would typically burn for 30 minutes, meaning someone had to constantly tend the light by moving the rush forward in the pincers. It's a vivid reminder of how much effort went into simply seeing after dark 250 years ago!
