A magnificent mid-Victorian figural cast iron stick stand in the Classical form of the infant Hercules strangling the serpent that has been sent to slay him. The stand is in excellent condition (just some scratches on his chest), with some lovely sharp casting, particularly the snake's scales and head, and the background foliage - if you've seen one of the reproduction examples of this subject, you'll appreciate the difference. The grassy base forms the removable drip tray. The original design was registered by Edwin & Theophilus Smith of Sheffield around 1860, but there is no identifying mark on this example.
