Description
This metal "set pot" or wash boiler, was a staple of 19th-century domestic life. Often referred to as a "copper" ,regardless of its actual metal, it served as the primitive precursor to the modern washing machine.
These massive pots were typically built into a brick furnace or "copper hole" in a scullery or outhouse. A fire would be lit in a grate underneath to boil linens and cottons.
