***Of historic Indian Empire interest: Between 1921-1922 HRH Edward Prince of Wales undertook a Royal Tour of India and on the 9th February 1922 the future King and Emperor arrived in Gwalior to a State entry into the City on an elephant accompanied by the Maharaja, followed by a tiger shoot and ultimately a dinner on the night of the 11th February at The Residency when this piece of table silver was made to commemorate the occasion. It was recorded as a particularly busy day for the Prince with racing and vast crowds at the Gymkana. The Gwalior Resident was a political appointment in the British Indian Empire which existed from 1782 until 1947. It administered an area of some 17,000 square miles in Central India with a population in 1901 of over 2m souls. The headquarters of the political officer was known as The Residency which occupied an area of over a square mile containing three villages in 1901 with a population of 1400, about 6km to the East of Gwalior Fort. The revenue from the Villages was devoted to the upkeep of the Residency.
