Description
A large carved woolly mammoth tusk of curved form with rich brown and tan hues. Tusk finely carved in late 19th Century in the traditional manor with a panoply of officials, attendants, scholars, elderly men, children and buildings. Signed to the end, the reverse with a continuous landscape of figures resting, fences, trees, bamboo and a boy riding a water-buffalo, text and signature.
110cm long, 95cm top to end, 8cm dia to end point. On a carved wooden stand of trees and scrolls.
Tusk signed 正光 : Masamitsu.
Text "借问酒家何处有， 牧童遥指杏花村" is from a poem called QingMing by Du Mu from the Tang Dynasty (China).
