Framed Cigarette Cards, issued by John Player & Sons (c1937), from series titled “Motor Cars”.

The cards have been mounted in appropriate frames (with four cards in each frame). It is considered that this is a particularly suitable way of displaying and being able to appreciate such interesting items.

In March 1820, William Wright had set up a small tobacco factory in Scotland at Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian. The business expanded and, before being sold to John Player in 1877, had earned Wright a comfortable fortune. John Player had the Castle Tobacco Factories built in Radford, Nottingham, just west of the city centre. Although he had three large factory blocks built, initially only one was used to process and pack tobacco. The other two blocks were loaned out to lace manufacturers in the city until his business had expanded enough to use the additional space.

Later, the business was run by John Player's sons, John Dane Player and William Goodacre Player.

Player's were one of the first UK tobacco companies to include sets of cards in their packs of cigarettes. These cards featured subjects that would have been of particular interest to the general public at the time. John Player & Sons issued more than 200 different sets of cards. The cards were generally produced in sets of 50 and have since become highly collectable.

This series of fifty cigarette cards featuring “Motor Cars” was issued in 1937 by John Player & Sons.
