Description
John Egerton Christmas Piper 1903 – 1992
One of the UK’s most celebrated painter and print-maker, his work is instantly recognisable, be it as individual works of art, or as book illustrations.
In his print making he used a number of techniques including Aquatints, Lithographs and Screen-printing. In the 1950’s screen-printing was utilised by Alan Davie and Peter Lanyon as they progressed a technique that had been used mainly for textile design. Later, in the 1960’s, it became popular with ‘Pop’ artists such as Gordon House and Richard Hamilton, but Piper, along with Victor Pasmore, used it in a far more complex manner, combining photographs and ephemera within the print. It’s main attraction was the ability to use exact colour tones, and vibrant depth of colour.
This print has been beautifully framed by Richard Hatfield at The Ropewalk Gallery in Barton on Humber.
