Description

19th Century Carved Marble Sculpture of Diana de Gabios. Depicting Diane with her hair tied back and her head tilted to the right where she is fixing the clasp on her tunic.

This is a copy of a Roman marble statue dating to the Hellenistic period. The statue was discovered by the English artist Gavin Hamilton in 1792 in the grounds of the Borghese family residence in the village of Gabies, near Rome.

The antique marble was later sold to Napoleon I by the Borghese and in 1820 it was sent to the Musée du Louvre where it remains.
