A Carved Oak Miniature Bust of William Penn, Late 19th Century

A Carved Oak Miniature Bust of William Penn, late 19th Century, in characteristic pose, wearing a hat and frock coat, bearing an old gummed paper label below, inscribed indistinctly in pen and ink indicating that it was made from  William Penn's demolished mansion. 

*** In 1681 King Charles 11 granted William Penn 1644-1718 a Royal Charter for 26 Million acres west of New Jersey and west of Maryland  on which to develop a colony and he and a group of Quaker families arrived in October 1682. Today it is possible to visit Pennsbury Manor up the Delaware River, Penn's country estate but no trace remains of any Philadelphian city property occupied by him. At one time it was claimed that the Letitia St House which was relocated in 1883 was originally lived in by William Penn but that has subsequently been disproved. It is known that he rented the Slate Roofed House as his city residence 1699-1701 indeed his son John Penn was born there. In 1867 the Slate Roofed House was demolished and records indicate that salvaged timbers were used to create souvenirs of which this charming oak bust is according to the old gummed label an example.
