Description
Carved Japanese netsuke in the form of a scholar. Netsuke originally served both functional and aesthetic purposes, in modern times they are now extremely collectable. The kimono, the traditional Japanese form of dress, had no pocket, so men suspended their tobacco pouches or pipes on a cord from their sash. Netsuke were used to stop the cord from slipping through the sash. Makers label to the base.
