Description

Early 20th Century Indian carving depicts a working elephant in a dynamic pose. Crafted from solid wood, the elephant is shown rolling a heavy log with its trunk and feet with a human rider, or mahout, guiding the animal's movements perched on top. The small scale statue captures a scene of traditional labor, focusing on the interaction between the rider, the animal, and the timber. Circa 1910. Artist's makers stamp can be seen to the side of the log.
