Description

A rare and unusual WWI prisoner of war camp photograph album. It is for Villingen, a German camp near the Swiss border that held Russian officer prisoners, as well as American flying personnel and officers later in the war. This brown card album seems to feature Russian prisoners, and it is dated 1917. It is filled with interesting photographs with captions from the visiting red cross, daily life, sports, art, library, and the food available. It was known as a model camp, where the prisoners were treated quite well, as you can see in the images. There are also images of a theatre with photographs of some men in drag as well as the productions they put on. One is written in Russian, so we do not know what they are about, the other is a French play called L'Affaire de la rue de Lourcine written in 1857. The back of the album has photographs of funerals and graves, presumedly they were prisoners who had died during internment. All in all, a very interesting album, that would benefit from further research.
