An impressive and rare copper line engraving of a panoramic view of Birmingham, by J. Harris after William Westley (first published 1732). The cartouche at the middle of the engraving dedicates the print to Thomas and Henry Archer: ‘To my worthy patrons / Thomas Archer and Henry Archer Esq.rs / This Plate is Humbly Dedicated / By their most Obedient Humble servant, W. Westley’.
To the left of this dedication, the text reads: ‘Birmingham, a market town in the county of Warwick, which by the art and industry of its inhabitants, has for some years past, been render'd famous all over the world, for the rare choice and invention of all sorts of wares and curiousitys, in iron, steel, brass etc: admir'd for their cheapness, as their particular beauty of workmanship. See a further account in the west prospect’. To the right are detailed seventeen places of interest, each numbered on the print.
The engraving is mounted in a modern glazed gilt frame, which has one or two light scuffs. The paper has some subtle creasing, presumably having been rolled up in the past, but displays well. There are some minor flaws outside the image area.
A fascinating and detailed record of Birmingham at an important time in its history.
