Description

After Michael Vander Hagen Birds Eye Map of El Escorial Monastery Palace. Depicting a bird's-eye view of the El Escorial monastery and palace in Spain. The complex, commissioned by King Philip II, was constructed between 1563 and 1584 to serve as a royal residence, a monastery, and a burial place for his father, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The design is based on a gridiron plan, a reference to the grill on which St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the building, was martyred. The print is a detailed representation of the 16th-century complex.
