Description

This is a very important original antique 18th century map of Roman Britain. It was a well known hoax involving a leading antiquarian of the time William Stukeley (1687-1765). The hoax was perpetrated by a Charles Julius Bertram, he was an English teacher in Copenhagen. He wrote to Stukeley telling him he was aware of a long lost medieval manuscript and map of ancient Roman towns. Stukeley fell for the hoax and persuaded Bertram to draw the map for him. This is an original hand coloured copy of the map, dated 1755. Apparently it was not until the 19th century that the map was finally proved to be a hoax, long after William Stukeley's death. Print size 32.5cm high by 39.5cm wide. Frame size 47cm high by 53cm wide. Dealer Code: 2785.
