Cotswold Street Scene - Framed Watercolour

A pretty street scene in the Cotswolds (of Church Street, Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire) showing Almshouses, St James’ Church and one of the lodges at the gateway to Campden House.

The Almshouses were built by wealthy silk merchant, Sir Baptist Hicks, in 1612 at a total cost of £1,000. They were built to house six poor men and six poor women. To this day they are still used by twelve pensioners from Chipping Campden. Across the road from the almshouses is a cart dip, for washing cartwheels.

The beautiful church of St James’ is a landmark for miles around and is a magnificent example of an early perpendicular wool church, rebuilt in the 15th century.

Next to the church are the lodges and the gateway to the old Campden House, built by Sir Baptist Hicks in the 17th century and burnt down during the Civil War.

In the early 20th century the area became known as the centre of the Cotswold Arts and Crafts Movement (following the arrival in Chipping Campden of Charles Robert Ashbee with the members of his Guild and School of Handicraft).

This picture is likely to have been painted in the mid 20th century although the scene is particularly timeless with buildings (on the outside) appearing the same today and little changed since being built.

There is a signature (bottom right of painting) but it is indistinct.
