A Limited Edition Print (number 16 of 250) of a Pair of Grey Partridges that is from a watercolour by wildlife artist Robin Armstrong.
This is a lovely representation of a pair of grey partridges and includes fine and delicate detail. Earlier paintings by Robin Armstrong tended to be in more of a traditional vein such as this, whereas his later works have evolved into becoming more stylised and contemporary.
The print is annotated "Robin Armstrong 1975" (bottom left) and "A Limited Edition of 250 copies of which this is Number 16" (bottom, incorporated into mount). It is signed “Robin Armstrong” in pencil (bottom, incorporated into mount) and is in an appropriate frame.
The grey partridge is a medium-sized, plump gamebird with a distinctive orange face. It is strictly a ground bird, never likely to be found in pear trees! Groups of 6-15 (known as coveys) are most usually seen outside the breeding season. Once very common and widespread, the grey partridge has undergone serious decline. They are traditionally found in lowland arable areas of Great Britain from the chalk areas in the south, into East Anglia, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, reaching into the north of England and the East of Scotland as far as Aberdeenshire. There are small populations in other parts such as the permanent rushy pastures in the north Pennines but they are largely absent from N Ireland.

Robin Armstrong is a British painter based in Devon, whose lifelike watercolours have been featured in magazine articles as well as in books by himself and other authors. He is widely regarded as one of the UK's most respected wildlife artists and has been painting for most of his life. His interest in nature and the environment began very early and he spent much of his childhood either watching birds or fishing, and very often both!
A professional life as an artist began when he joined a commercial London art studio as a trainee illustrator and quickly rose to being a young studio manager. His passion for the environment and nature, and his determination to escape city life and pollution, led him to correspond and eventually meet and befriend the legendary Ewan Clarkson, a pioneering environmental writer of his time.
In 1969 Robin moved to the west country and lodged with Ewan and his family, then moved on to the wilderness of high Dartmoor and threw himself into making a living as a full-time artist. His early exhibitions were successful, TV and radio programmes were made about him and he had high-quality art books published.
Still living on his beloved Dartmoor, Robin remains on a quest to understand and capture the changing world around him.
