Lincolnshire Map By Robert Morden

This authentic copperplate engraving of Lincolnshire is a premier example from the 1722 second edition of William Camden’s Britannia. Published by Swale and Churchill, this version is highly sought after by collectors for its superior production value compared to the 1695 original. It is printed on significantly thicker, high quality handmade paper with much wider margins. A key diagnostic for this 1722 state is the "horse in a 3-inch circle" watermark, which is often visible when the map is held to a light source. The 1722 edition features corrected place-name spellings based on local feedback to better reflect period pronunciation. It retains Morden’s signature inclusion of three different mileage scales Great, Middle, and Small miles as the statute mile was not yet universal. The map meticulously depicts the county’s three ancient divisions: Lindsey, Kesteven, and Holland.
