Description

For sale is a lovely original watercolour painting by the noted British artist, Laura Sylvia Gosse, better known as Sylvia Gosse. She was born in 1881 and trained at St John’s Wood Art School and then later at the Royal Academy of Art (1906-09). In 1908 her work was noticed by the eminent British artist Walter Sickert who suggested she learn the skill of etching. She enrolled in Sickert’s classes and eventually took over the running of the school, known as Rowlandson House, until 1914. Gosse painted in a style similar to Sickert, a style known as a form of avant-garde art. This piece is, I believe, a self portrait of Gosse and dates to the 1930’s. I have seen portraits of Gosse by other artists particularly Gilman and the subject here does resemble that likeness. The sitter is fully clothed so it could represent Gosse’s sense of isolation with her peers. Gosse exhibited widely in the 1920’s and 30’s and although her work is clearly influenced by Sickert, he too, was influenced by his friendship with Gosse. Although present in the Camden Town Group circles, she kept a much lower profile, preferring her own company to that of fellow artists. In 1926 she was elected to membership of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and in 1930 became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
The piece is 49cm x 46cm framed.
