Description

Pair of 18th Century Watercolours by Nicholas Pocock OWS. Both picturing sailing ships on a river in a countryside setting.

Nicholas Pocock was the finest marine painter in Britain during the Napoleonic period.

A pair of watercolours the first signed and dated 1792 of Hotwells Clifton Wood; The Avon Gorge,

Provenance:

1) Mary Ann Kennet Dawson, 1867 ; manuscript labels verso;
2) Frost & Reed, Ltd, Nos. 112/E10707 & E10708, 29.4.49, 16 guineas; labels verso.

He was noted as being the finest and most popular marine painter in Britain during the Napoleonic period, his work being well informed by his own practical experience as a seaman. He also produced a number of distinctive landscapes.

• Exhibited at the Royal Academy:
Nicholas Pocock exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1782 until 1812.
• Founded the O.W.S.:
In 1804, he was a founding member of the Society of Painters in Water-colours (later the Royal Watercolour Society), and exhibited at their annual shows.
• Naval Commissions:
He was commissioned to depict key battles of the French Wars, taking care to obtain first-hand accounts from naval participants.
• Pocock retired in 1817 due to ill health and moved to Maidenhead, where he died in 1821.
• His artistic work is well-represented in major public collections today, including the National Maritime Museum , TATE , Royal Academy and the Government Art Collection
