Description
This pair of miniature portraits depicts the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his favorite consort, Mumtaz Mahal. These works are quintessential examples of Anglo-Indian "Company School" art, created in Delhi circa 1860–1870.
The portraits are typically gouache and gold painted onto thin ovals of bone.
Housed in a richly decorated, hand-carved frame, a hallmark of high-quality Indian miniature work from this era.
