Description

This is a rare antique 18th or 19th century broadside print. It is a print of the first rules of boxing, drawn up by the famous 18th century boxer Jack Broughton. He laid these rules out for Broughton's Amphitheatre in Tottenham Court Road London on the 16th August 1743. The basic rules were that the fight would be bare-knuckle, and that the boxer must get back up before 30 seconds in order to continue the fight. Many of these rules listed are still followed today, it was not until 1838 that the London Prize Rules were introduced. This broadside could be an original printed in 1743, or perhaps a Victorian print, it is not a modern copy. For some context, a broadside was a single sided print that was intended to be pasted on walls and posts to advertise or announce something. They were popular from the 16th to 19th centuries. This print has a central vingette titled 'The Ring' surrounded by four images of sparring boxers, and small areas of hand colouring. The broadside is in a old pine wood and glazed frame, the poster has been stuck onto a wooden backing board.
For anyone interesting in the history of boxing, this print is a must have item.
