Large Meiji Period Ebonised Shodana Display Cabinet

This is a large, exhibition quality Japanese Shodana (Display Cabinet) from the Meiji Period (1868-1912), crafted from softwood with an ebonised finish. This cabinet is a spectacular piece of furniture, guaranteed to stand out in any home, whether used to display collections or simply as a distinctive bookcase. Its visual appeal stems from the intricate carving throughout the entire structure, which is beautifully complemented by striking panels that are painted with delicate scenes of flowers and birds executed in ivory and mother-of-pearl.

The cabinet is crowned with a large, carved pediment centred with a beautifully detailed carved bird amongst flowers. Adding to the unique arrangement is a remarkable carved oriental bridge shelf located in the middle, which visually and physically connects the upper and lower shelving sections. The cabinet provides ample storage and display space, featuring two sets of sliding door cupboards and two hinged cupboards distributed across the top and bottom sections. All these door panels are uniquely decorated with intricate mother of pearl and ivory scenes. Just above the intricately carved base, there are three drawers, each also featuring its own uniquely decorated panel. The entire structure stands proudly on a complexly carved base.
