Description

This exceptional antique Victorian rosewood credenza, dating to approximately 1874, is a superb example of high quality furniture, attributed to the renowned cabinet makers Gillows of Lancaster. The credenza is distinguished by its elegant serpentine form and the contrasting material of its top, a white Italian Carrara marble slab, subtly veined in grey. The focal point of the design is the central cupboard door, overlaid with intricate blind fretwork and framed by moulded borders, a pattern echoed by the fabric backed fretwork panels flanking it on each side. Carved uprights of a slightly arched form visually frame the central door, leading the eye outward where the serpentine front gently sweeps to the sides. The decorative scheme is made cohesive by the presence of a matching carved moulding that finishes both the base and the lower edge of the frieze, mirroring the moulding that frames the fretwork doors. The credenza's material is key to its visual richness; the richly figured rosewood veneers display exceptional colour and grain, highlighting the craftsmanship.

The functional aspect of the piece is accessed via a working lock and key, revealing an interior fitted with a single shelf that spans the full width of the cupboard space. The piece carries tangible evidence of its origin and age, bearing the stamped number "1802" both on the top edge of the central door and on the surface of the credenza directly beneath the removable marble top. In line with Gillows’ established system of design and stock numbers, this specific numerical mark corresponds to a manufacture date in the year 1874. While originally designed as a sideboard or credenza for the display and storage of dining plate and accoutrements, this distinguished piece is perfectly suited for modern applications, serving as a striking statement console, a versatile storage cabinet, or a magnificent focal point within a dining room, entrance hall, or study.
