These vinegar based scents would soak the sponge contained within the vinaigrette, which could be opened and held to the nose to ward off unpleasant smells encountered in the streets, or for the inhalation of restorative vapours.
Makers mark Samuel Pemberton.
Samuel Pemberton was a silversmith, toymaker, and jeweller operating in Birmingham in the 18th and 19th centuries. Registered at Snow Hill, Birmingham, Pemberton was responsible for the production of silver novelties such as vinaigrettes.
