Description
Early 19th century George III Vinagrette. Hallmarked Birmingham 1809. Engraved with leaf pattern to the front and E. Smith to the back. Featuring original sponge.
These vinegar based scents would soak the sponge contained within the vinaigrette, which could be opened and held to the nose to ward off unpleasant smells encountered in the streets, or for the inhalation of restorative vapours.
Makers mark Samuel Pemberton.
Samuel Pemberton was a silversmith, toymaker, and jeweller operating in Birmingham in the 18th and 19th centuries. Registered at Snow Hill, Birmingham, Pemberton was responsible for the production of silver novelties such as vinaigrettes.
