When you're creating an unforgettable setting, authenticity matters. Whether you're dressing a haunted manor for Halloween, sourcing film props for a period drama, or designing immersive theatre stage props for an escape room experience, genuine antiques bring a level of character that simply can't be replicated.
At Hemswell Antique Centres, we regularly work with production companies, prop buyers, interior stylists and creative designers who are looking for distinctive pieces that will instantly transform a space. Home to over 400 specialist dealers across four expansive buildings, we are the largest antique centre in Europe. Our extensive selection of antique furniture makes it easy to source everything from statement furniture to smaller finishing touches in a single visit.
Why antique furniture works so well for productions
Unlike reproduction furniture, genuine antiques have a real story to tell. Original craftsmanship, aged timber, worn leather, authentic patina and period construction all add visual depth that cameras love. Whether the audience notices consciously or not, authentic antiques create believable environments for films, television productions, and theatre performances.
They're equally effective for seasonal attractions. Halloween experiences, haunted houses and escape rooms rely on atmosphere, and nothing creates mystery quite like furniture that already has decades—or centuries—of history behind it.
These are our top tips for creating the perfect scene:
Choose key furniture pieces first
The largest items establish the mood of any room, so begin by sourcing the furniture that defines your setting.
A substantial collection of antique tables, for example, can become anything from a Victorian séance table to a medieval tavern centrepiece.
Need a detective's office, Victorian study or aristocratic library? Antique desks instantly create believable workspaces for period productions and immersive experiences.
Likewise, antique chairs help complete every scene, whether you're furnishing a courtroom, dining room, waiting room or abandoned mansion.
Add atmosphere with storage furniture
Storage furniture often becomes a focal point within productions.
Beautiful antique display cabinets are perfect for showcasing mysterious artefacts, curiosities or museum exhibits in escape rooms, while antique sideboards provide practical styling opportunities for dining scenes, hotel receptions or grand hallways.
For libraries, studies and detective offices, nothing looks more convincing than genuine antique bookcases filled with aged books and period accessories. These larger furniture pieces also help define different zones within film sets or theatrical productions.
Don't overlook dining scenes
Dining rooms feature in everything from historical dramas to horror films, making an antique dining table and dining chairs set one of the most versatile investments for prop buyers.
Whether you're recreating an elegant Georgian banquet, a Victorian family home or an abandoned manor house, original dining furniture instantly establishes period authenticity while providing flexibility for different productions.
A one-stop destination for film and theatre props
Production schedules rarely leave much time for sourcing. Instead of travelling between multiple antique shops, Hemswell enables buyers to source film props, theatre props, theatrical props and complete room sets in one location.
Alongside furniture, you'll also discover lighting, mirrors, artwork, clocks, luggage, scientific instruments, architectural salvage, vintage accessories and countless decorative items that help complete every scene. If you're searching for something particularly unusual, our dealer network can often help locate specialist pieces beyond those currently on display.
This breadth of stock makes Hemswell equally valuable for television productions, independent filmmakers, commercial photography, museums, themed attractions and escape room designers.
