How to clean an antique mirror

Antique mirrors, by definition, have stood the test of time but how can you keep them looking their best, without diminishing their value? We tell you how!

There are lots of reproduction and, dare we say it, fake mirrors on the market so before attempting to clean yours, first make sure it is a genuine piece.

Characteristics of an antique mirror

A true antique will give away its age in the details. The mirror glass will be far from perfect and may have signs of bubbling, or dark patches that have formed towards the bottom of the mirror. The hardware fixings may be handcrafted and will almost certainly pre-date mass produced fixings. Remember too that an original frame will also show its age – there will be wear and tear, and areas of deep carving will house dust that is deep-rooted.
Buying from reputable dealers like the Hemswell experts will give you peace of mind that your mirror is genuine and then you can start the cleaning process to maintain its condition and value.

Cleaning antique mirror glass

There are lots of homemade ‘recipes’ online for cleaning solutions to clean antique mirror glass but beware the use of anything abrasive – such as bicarbonate of soda – that can cause irreparable damage to glass. Similarly, shop bought mirror cleaners often contain harsh ingredients, including chemicals, that can leave streaks that are impossible to remove. White vinegar is an effective cleaner and should be diluted in two parts of water to one part white vinegar. This can be sprayed on the mirror glass and rubbed over with newspaper (yes, it really works to remove stubborn marks and leave a smear-free finish!), or a lint-free cloth like a microfibre cloth. For less severe marks and smudges, plain water should be sufficient, on a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning antique mirror frames

Always keep any cleaning solution you use on your mirror glass, away from the frame, as shop-bought and homemade solutions can damage antique coatings. Begin by dusting the frame carefully with a microfibre cloth – for ornate frames, use a soft bristled brush to gently brush in the hard to reach places. For stubborn marks, use a damp cloth but always ensure the frame is thoroughly fried after. Wooden frames will benefit from a coating of wax or cream polish but never use a spray polish.

Tips for cleaning an antique mirror

•    Avoid all harsh chemicals.
•    Steering clear of bleach, salt, or dishwashing liquid, as these can all damage the mirror or frame.
•    Clean regularly but not too often – a weekly dust is enough.
•    Clean only when necessary, as excessive cleaning can wear down the silver over time – aim for no more often than once a month.
•    Be patient! Thorough cleaning will take time and should not be rushed.
•    Remember your antique mirror is just that, an antique, and will never look brand new! It is likely to have imperfections – don’t try to make these right, and just embrace them for giving your mirror its uniqueness.

How to store or display an antique mirror

•    If you use your antique mirror, position it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as radiators as this will reduce the risk of the wood drying out or fading.
•    If your mirror is to be stored, ensure it has been cleaned before wrapping it in acid-free tissue paper and bubble wrap. Store in a covered box wherever possible.
•    Also store mirrors upright and leaning against something to prevent it falling – if stored horizontally, the mirror is at risk of something being placed on top of it which can warp the frame,
•    Antique mirrors should be stored where it will not be exposed to extremes of temperature or humidity.
