Staffordshire pottery figures were made from the 1800s. Most being manufactured before 1900. They were almost exclusively made in small potteries where identifying makers’ marks were absent. Now collectively described as Staffordshire Figures from the Potteries, Staffordshire, England (although some were made in other parts of the country).
Early figures were made in stoneware. Expensive ones in porcelain. But as the19th century progressed and their popularity increased they were generally made in pottery for the cheaper mass market.
