Creagh-Osborne WW1 Pattern 261 Wrist Compass. With original strap and in working condition. The "PATT. 261" mark on the rim identifies it as a specific British military design from the early 20th century ,circa 1914–1918.
A rare piece of early aviation equipment used by the British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) during World War I. Originally designed for balloon observers and early pilots, this "prismatic" compass allowed users to take accurate bearings while flying.
This model was developed by Captain Frank Creagh-Osborne, a pioneer in aerial navigation and the Superintendent of Compasses for the British Admiralty.
