Contact us about Figured Walnut Campaign Chest Of Drawers
This is a beautiful example of a Victorian (1837-1901) Campaign Chest of Drawers crafted from figured walnut. The chest features a traditional configuration with two long drawers across the bottom section and one long drawer and two smaller drawers situated to the upper section, all retaining their original inset brass handles. A defining characteristic of campaign furniture is its adaptability for travel, and this piece embodies that design. It stands on four turned toupee feet, which are a unique and practical feature because they can all be unscrewed for compactness and ease of transport. The main body splits in to two pieces.
The construction emphasizes both utility and artistry. The chest incorporates robust brass fittings, which serve to protect the edges during transit. A testament to the original maker's thoughtfulness and art of design is evident in the figured walnut veneer applied to the front of the drawers; it has been meticulously arranged to create a continuous, flame like pattern across the facade.
Campaign furniture itself was specifically created to accompany individuals travelling across the world, primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although it is predominantly known for pieces used in military campaigns, it was also favoured by adventurers and explorers. This furniture type was intentionally designed for frequent movement, often featuring inset handles and the ability to separate into multiple, manageable pieces, ensuring durability and portability on the move.
