Major Harman Water Colour Portrait, Circa 1900. Mounted in a glazed frame.
Major George Malcolm Nixon Harman DSO (1872–1914) was a career officer in the British Army's Rifle Brigade whose service spanned the height of the British Empire and the beginning of World War I.
Early Service and DSO: As a Captain, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1902 for his "services during the operations in the Lango District of Uganda". This specific clasp for the East & West Africa Medal is noted as exceptionally rare, with only eight European recipients.
From July 1902 to November 1904, he served with the Anglo-German Boundary Commission west of Lake Victoria (Victoria Nyanza).
Following his time in East Africa, he was stationed in Malta and Alexandria with the 4th Battalion. He was promoted to Major in June 1907 and subsequently joined the 2nd Battalion in Calcutta, India.
He was killed in action by shell fire on 28 November 1914 while in billets at Laventie, France.
