The Wallis family were among the most celebrated gunsmiths in 18th and 19th-century England. George Wallis (1731–1803) was a master craftsman and antiquarian who established one of Hull's earliest museums. His son, George Wallis Junior (d. 1833), continued the business and is credited with inventing the first successful swivel-mounted harpoon gun for the whaling industry.
