1000-1470 AD
The Chancay culture was an ancient civilisation that flourished along the central coast of Peru, particularly in the Chancay and Chillo valleys from around 1000-1470 AD. The Chancay culture is known for its distinctive artistic style, sophisticated textiles and complex social organisation.
Chancay textiles are renowned for their quality, complexity and artistic expression. Chancay weavers used cotton and camelid fibres such as Alapca or Llama to create textiles with intricate designs including geometric patterns, stylised animals and human figures. These textiles were used for clothing, ceremonial garments, everyday use and burial shrouds.
