How can we help?

Antique gift ideas for Mother’s Day

In the UK, Mother’s Day falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday and, in 2022, this will be Sunday, March 27th. Originally a date in the religious calendar, ‘Mothering Sunday’ was the day to visit your ‘mother’ church where you grew up. Mother’s Day today is a secular holiday and the opportunity to honour and thank our mothers and grandmothers. It can be difficult to find the perfect gift but here are our favourite twists on the traditional chocolates and flowers.

The BBC reported that in 2018, we spent an enormous £1.3 billion on cut flowers and ornamental plants in the UK, so it’s no wonder that three quarters of Mother’s Day gifts are flowers. But flowers fade, so if you are considering a floral tribute this year, why not gift a beautiful vase too? That way, your Mum will have a lasting reminder of a special day, the next time she receives a bouquet. From traditional cut glass crystal pieces to mid-century classics from Whitefriars, we have vases to suit every type of floral gift.

Just as Mothers inspire, motivate and encourage us, so do books. Thoughtful and thought-provoking, a book can convey every type of emotion. Browse our books and ephemera and on any one day you could find first editions, classic 19th century literature, or even a beautiful fore-edge painted volume. And as an added something special, an antique book rack and bookmark would make the perfect complement.

Will you be visiting your mother this year and taking delicious cake for an afternoon tea together? Then serve it in style on a ceramic cake stand. Popular with Victorians, wooden folding cake stands can be used long after the cake has been eaten to display precious ornaments and house plants too. If afternoon tea sounds great but the thought of preparing it doesn’t appeal, then book an afternoon tea at Hemswell Antique Centres. With a selection of sweet and savoury treats and plenty of homemade delights, our afternoon tea is served with tea, coffee or hot chocolate, but for a little extra, you can choose a Prosecco Afternoon Tea for that extra sparkle!

If you can’t be with your mother this year and worry about having the generic floral bouquet delivered, browse our Antiques posted for £15. With pieces from around the world, representing every era and covering almost every category of antique, prices start from less than the cost of a small bouquet. You can rest in the knowledge that your item will be carefully and professionally packaged, and delivered straight to the door.

And finally, if your Mum really is that hard to buy for, but you know how much she would appreciate an antique or vintage gift for Mother’s Day, A Hemswell Antique Centres Gift Voucher is the perfect present. Available to buy in-store from as little as £10, our Gift Cards can also be purchased over the telephone on 01427 668389 where we can arrange for the voucher to be delivered to an address of your choice.
