A history of Mother’s Day in the UK and why antiques make the best gift

Antique gifts for Mothers Day

Our latest guide looks at the history of Mother’s Day and highlights some special gifts for the mother in your life.

A history of Mother’s Day

Today, Mother’s Day is a secular celebration of all the mothers and mother figures in our lives. However, Mother’s Day has religious roots dating back to the 16th century, when people would return to their mother church on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Their mother church could be the church where they were baptised, their local parish church or even the nearest cathedral. This tradition gradually evolved into Mothering Sunday being a day of leave that was given to anyone in domestic service, to attend their mother church with members of their family. Today, the religious element of Mother’s Day has been replaced and it is now a day for gifting presents to mothers.

When is Mother’s Day?

Today, Mother’s Day is still celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent and in 2023, this will fall on Sunday March 19th.

Mother’s Day gifts

For many of us, the default gift is a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates, but there are some wonderful antique gifts that will brighten any mother’s special day and they don’t have to break the bank.

If you really do want to give flowers, think outside the box and browse our flower themed antiques. Vintage ceramic is always a popular gift and Moorcroft is famous for its flower patterns, including anemones, columbines, and hibiscus. And a Moorcroft vase will show off any bouquets she does get! Where antique silver is more to her taste, perhaps a piece of silver embossed or engraved with flowers?

Antique silver photo frames

What grandmother wouldn’t love a photo of the grandchildren? And what could be nicer than to present it in a beautiful silver photo frame? With prices starting from little more than the cost of a flamboyant bouquet, this is a gift that will last forever.

Choosing antique gifts doesn’t have to be hard. At Hemswell we have over 1500 gifts for every occasion to browse online, as well as the same number of antiques that can be posted for £15 – ideal if you can’t be with your mother this year. But, if you’re worried that you might get it wrong, why not bring your mum to Hemswell and give her a great day out. She can browse the wares from over 300 dealers in person, and then take a break while you treat her to a delicious afternoon tea! Where you live too far away to accompany your mum to the centres, why not purchase a Hemswell Antique Centres Gift Voucher? Available to purchase over the telephone on 01427 668389, gift vouchers can be loaded with any amount starting from just £10, and we can even arrange for the voucher to be delivered directly to your mother.

Flowers may be beautiful but they are short lived and quickly fade, so make 2023 the year you break away from flowers and chocolate, and buy with confidence from an established and reputable antique centre like Hemswell.
