Single 19th century Staffordshire Spaniel with chain and padlock.
White ground with age related extensive discolouration and crazing. Lusterware details worn. With the more unusual detached leg. Pretty face.
Ceramic spaniels were predominately made in The Potteries, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, hence the name.
It was very fashionable for pairs of spaniels, also called walley dogs to be placed on the mantle piece of C19th & C20th homes.
Spaniels were a favourite due to their connection with English Royal family, especially Queen Victoria. Each pair is often hand painted and unique, with a range of facial expressions from happy to ferocious.
They have become very collectable over the years. They are really irresistible
