Doulton Lambeth Puzzle Jug. The game that the puzzle jug presented was to challenge the drinker to find a way to get the liquid out without spilling it. In addition to having holes around the neck, puzzle jugs usually had a number of spouts positioned on the top edge of the jug. It wasn’t always immediately clear that these openings were spouts. This jug has just that with several holes and spouts along with a secret hole under the handle at the top to create more of a challenge. A verse around the outside reading "From mother earth I claim my birth, I'm made a joke for man, but now I'm here filled with good cheer, come taste me if you can" is designed to taunt the drinker into challenging them to drink from the jug without spilling any of the liquid.
