Description
This is a Rare Surviving Handwritten Ledger Punishment Book for an Institution. From Research I Have Done I Can Confirm the Book is From the Tunstall Road Institution in Tunstall Staffordshire. About a Third of the Ledger is Filled in, Starting in 1935 and Ending in 1948. with Their Name, Offence, Date, Punishment and The Workhouse Masters Initials. The Master During This Period Was a Jones Herbert Budden.
The Ledger is From Elsworth Bros. Ltd of Leeds.
There are Repeated Names of Certain Individual Men Who Were Either Absent Without Leave, or Returned Late and Drunk. The Punishments Tended to be the Same, Which Was Leave and Tobacco Suspended for a Month.
The Tunstall Road Institution Was Built in 1838 and Started Life as the Chell Workhouse, Before Becoming the Westcliffe Hospital and Residential Home in Later Years. I am Not Sure if the Building is Still Standing.
