Description

An Art Deco oak twin drawer box table raised on four bobbin turned plain stretchered legs terminating with square supports raised on bun feet. The drawer fronts are enhanced by attractive polished cast brass drop handles with pretty floral backings and brass lock escutcheons; opening to reveal solid oak inners with reliable lever locks (sadly no key) and royal blue velvet lining housing the impressive twelve place setting cutleries. The velvet is in remarkably good condition retaining the original labels to identify the correct position for each piece. The solid oak table has been recently refinished with traditional French Polish to create a warm mid oak finish that reveals the beautiful oak figuration. Within the cabinet the canteen is complete; having approximately 160 pieces of quality old English pattern silver plate cutlery including servers, cut glass cruet and carving set mainly by rare Sheffield maker W & J Wing. The cabinet is in the round making it an attractive free standing table however securing holes enable it to be secured to the wall to avoid overstretching; wherever situated this is an impressive and attractive addition to your dining experience.

Our research has found M & J (Michael & Joseph) Wing to be a steel works (making tools and raps) sited at Jericho works Hallam Sheffield being established 1780 and listed in Graces as 1925-1945. We are unable to find M & J Wing as a cutler; we have seen on the lock (made by reliable) a mark thought to be related to the Masons making us assume the possibility the piece was made as a board item or for a board member? All indications are this is thought to have been produced during the Art Deco period by an unusual maker. Further research may produce more information of interest but this is a good quality item in exceptional condition for its age.
