Description

This is an Early 20th Century Drinking Cup Made From a Gourd. It is Called a Yerba Mate and is From Argentina. Yerba Mate is a Traditional Herbal Tea From Central and South America. The Crushed Leaves are Steeped in Hot Water, and it is Traditionally Drunk Through a Special Type of Straw Called a Bombilla. It is Supposed to be a Very Healthy Drink, But Does Taste Rather Bitter.
The Vessel is Carved with Bowls of Fruit, Hearts and Scroll Work. The Cup is Mounted in Unmarked Silver or Silver Plate Which is Also Decorated with Flowers and Leaves. The Stalk of the Gourd Has an Attached Stand and a Top Surmounted by a Bird. A Carved Word 'Recuerbo' Which Means Memory is on One Side.
